Iqbal’s poetry works on many levels and is one of the most difficult to understand and translate, here is what I interpret this sher as

Do not keep it protected because your mirror (here it means heart), is the one
that if it is weak or broken, it would be in the eyes of the creator

  1. I feel the interpretation is “you do not keep your self in safe mode always, take the hard challenging roads towrds success and happiness and even if you fail you will you will never loose the self respect and dignity in your own mirror reflection.

    1. Assalamualaikum, Dear brother,
Here’s the actual meaning… “Tu bacha bacha ke na rakh ise,
      (Don’t keep it protected.)
Tera Aaina (face) hai wo Aaina,
      (Your face is that face.)
      Ke shikasta ho
      (If it’s get damaged/scared,)
to azeeztar hai nigah-e-aaina saaz mein.
(Then it’s loved the most in the eyes of the face maker (God).)
Explaination: The shayari is about the martyrs and the revolutionaries to raise the spirits of the readers to also walk on their path. It’s telling that don’t keep your face protected, means don’t let your potentialities be unused by hiding from hardships. Infact, if your face get ugly fully with scars due to injuries, then on the day of resurrection those dead people’s faces will be dearer to Allah(God) more than a beautiful face. It means god don’t values the beauty but values the work which the man has done for him in this world, and if it get injuries then don’t be sad. Because your scars to you beautiful.
Here, it is based on Islamic historical event, where the uncle of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH), Hamza (RA) was assassinated in Jang-e-Uhud battlefield by a nigro spearman appointed by Hind Bint Utbah.
The shayar, Allama Iqbal wrote this shaer for his Martyrdom.

The really important thing to mention, Hind Bint Utbah after Humza’s (RA) assassination, took his body and then really badly rip-tear his face, cutted his nose, ears & lip. And then hung them in neck by making necklace of them and danced on his body. You can imagine how cruel act it was, and how ugly that face would be, so that’s why Allama Iqbal wrote to honour his face.

  5. Maulana Tariq Jameel used this when explaining Ikhlaq. If someone hurts you, forgive them. If your wound is spreading due to someone’s bad behaviour, learn to endure and let it pass. Your wound will be very dear in the eyes of Allah SWT (our creator).
